About
Identity. It’s something that every band needs, and it’s something that The Poor and the Prevalent had lacked in their 5 years of existence. Many things played a part in this. A definitive lineup, for one. The band has seen members come and go, styles change, motivation wane, direction wander, and many other factors that could lead to a band falling apart. Yet through it all, out of the adversity, The Poor and the Prevalent emerge. Formed in 2006 under the name Steps Away, the band worked to find itself. Original members Mark and Emily Miller, Jeff Helget, and Peter Larson come from a diverse background of musical influences that didn’t always mesh coherently. This made finding a defined sound a constant battle. Followed by the addition of a lead guitarist and drummer with roots in heavy metal and hardcore, the band took a heavier turn to a sound that never really quite fit. In their departure, the Poor and the Prevalent were left with little constraint, and thus, little direction. A fortunate housing situation brought the addition of drummer Darin Knox, who brought the right musical instincts to tie everything together. A few months later, lead guitarist Hunter Becker was added to the lineup in a move that finally brought the band into their own element.
The chemistry of the six members brought their music to the next level, and a trip to the studio became a necessary and desired move. The band spent over two months in the studio recording “Decline and Fall”, an EP that addresses the issues in the world that are bringing it to destruction, and the final turn to God that will prove to be the only salvation possible.
After a long and arduous search for a band name to match the new lineup, the Poor and the Prevalent emerged. Inspired by the Emery song of the same name, it signifies how we may be poor in this world, but as children of God and believers in Christ, we are prevalent and powerful and rich beyond measure.
Look for “Decline and Fall” for purchase at upcoming shows, or order it now on iTunes, AmazonMP3, and Zune! You can even get physical copies of it shipped to you through Interpunk!
The Poor and the Prevalent have also released a new single “Disconnect” which will be featured on the forthcoming Zerobudget Records 25th-year anniversary compilation. The band wanted to push themselves in every aspect on the new song: lyrically, musically, vocally, and creatively. It features TPATP at their heaviest, lightest, most melodic and most powerful.
