About
A drinking band with a rock problem certainly describes Winona, MN based rock & roll outfit Hawthorn Guild. Formed in 2004 as an excuse for some college friends to jam and drink PBR, Hawthorn Guild, as if by accident, stumbled upon a sound that was totally theirs. Rock for the sake of rock, not cock rock, hard or heavy rock, alterna-rock, (fill in the blank) rock; just real no frills rock and roll.
Their first album “Rebuilding Paradise” was picked up and released by Zerobudget Records in the summer of 2006 and the band did shows all across the upper Midwest in support of the album. All members than graduated college. The machine kept going for another year or so with the writing of almost an entire second record, when drummer Maravelas abruptly moved to the Twin Cities, with guitarist Bortz heading to Milwaukee shortly thereafter.
A few long distance rehearsals were planned and executed but space began to form not just in miles between members; but in time between practices as well. Once a month turned into once every three until it had been well over 3 years since the members had played together. All members decided when the time came it would be right.
Fast forward 2010: Zerobudget Records contacts members of the Guild to participate in their 25th Anniversary project and “possibly” even their showcase shows surrounding the year. The Guild thought it time to at least record some “lost” material and begin discussing a recording plan. This turned into plans for a full on jam vs just a recording session. The group convened for a rehearsal at Maravelas 14:59 Studios in the Twin Cities and it was exactly the same as it was almost 4 years earlier. Plans were made to finish the second album, rehearsing once a month and record some new music. New album slated for release late 2011, early 2012.
